Albuquerque Police Department Achieves Major Milestones in Policing Reform

We are thrilled to share some positive news from Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Department of Justice (DOJ) recently announced that the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) has achieved major milestones in its efforts to reform its department following a consent decree. This is a significant accomplishment for the APD and the City of Albuquerque, and it reflects the hard work and dedication of many people.

The DOJ's press release highlights several key areas of progress, including:

  • Equipping officers with body-worn cameras
  • Creating a civilian investigative unit
  • Increasing crisis intervention training

These reforms are essential for building trust between the police and the community. They will help to ensure that officers are held accountable for their actions and that people in Albuquerque feel safe interacting with the police.

From Darryl Neier, the External Force Investigation Team Administrator

"I am honored to have played a small part as the External Force Investigative Team Administrator; and congratulate the members of the Albuquerque Police Department for the accomplishment of transforming the police department. This week it was announced that the APD is now in full compliance with major parts of the Federal Consent Decree," said Mr. Daryl Neier, the External Force Investigation Team (EFIT) Administrator.

DLG is proud to have played a role in supporting the APD's reform efforts. We are confident that these changes will make a positive difference in the lives of people in Albuquerque.

Looking Ahead

While the APD has made significant progress, there is still more work to be done. Though challenges remain, the Justice Department said “it is committed to supporting city leaders, community stakeholders and the police department as we work together to implement lasting institutional reform that makes constitutional policing a reality for everyone across Albuquerque.”

DLG is committed to supporting law enforcement agencies in their efforts to reform and improve their practices. We believe that all communities deserve to have police departments that they can trust.
